Cost a fortune and gives us a weekly base connection error in return. I don't know what's wrong with its configuration. Each time we unplug and replug it when Internet is down, we need to wait a whole day before the status light turns back to green and the gateway configures itself back to Internet. What is it doing during these red light error hours? Whomever ever Telsta executive decided on this should be shot, revived then shot again. It's the size of a planet with the capabilities of a peanut. You can't even add an aerial for extended reception. 90's technology for the new millenium?? Only Telstra could be so stoopid and cheap.Where on earth are you supposed to hang/mount this ugly monstrosity. The 'Feet' on the back prevent wall mounting and the access to the various sockets are pointing backwards which also prevents wall mounting.
Also, no way you can put it on a wall or lay it down due to these wires.Reception is average to poor, and power usage is through the roof, power adapter and Modem running hot 24/7.On the plus side, it is easy to set up and throw in the bin. I live in a two-storey townhouse with the modem located downstairs. The Wifi range is actually really good throughout the whole house as well as outside. I've used the Wifi at least 40 meters away from the modem with no problem in terms of speed and connection at all. I bought it through the Telstra ADSL2+ plan and have used it for about eighteen months. I rarely have drop outs and have maybe needed to reboot the system twice during that time.
I have used other modems and whilst the range is ok, their connection drop out rate and need to reboot is at least every couple of days - so I am pretty impressed with this unit overall. Like everyone else, I had daily dropout and speed problems with Telstra provided router on NBN. My router was plugged into double GPO. 12 months ago, I installed a sensor light plugged into the same GPO as the router. I just identified that everytime the dog or I walked past the sensor light, the router would beep but would not necessarily fail.
However I believe it is the source of my reliability issue. This has been occuring for three months so maybe the sensor light is failing.
So I removed sensor light dedicating the GPO to the Tels. Read more tra router and the NBN box so we will see if that fixes the issue. Possibly the electronics in the TG797nV3 router may not be shielded properly for Australian 220/240v circuits and sometimes fails. So dedicate the powerpoint for the router and see if the reliability improves.
On 2 occasions now I have had Telstra blame ADSL dropouts on NON Telstra modems. 2 times they have turned up and put one of these pieces of junk in place and both times it has made no difference at all. It seems to be a thing they do to try to phob you off. Eventually though after much nashing of teeth, they fixed the exchange and line issues that where the real problem,I did try to use this modem, it is a complete bordello of an interface. Who makes this stuff! Most routers are similar and if you can work on one brand you can another. But not so this modem, it has an interface like no other, very confusing and illogical.
The worst router I have ever worked on. We have replaced our Telstra Modem twice after numerous connection issues. At no time has Telstra ever acknowledged an issue with their modems, instead they steer the problems to your in house connections etc. We have spent countless frustrating hours on the phone to Telstra to sort our connection & drop out issues with no real resolution.
We were resetting our modem in excess of a dozen times a day to reconnect to the internet. Our modem would drop LAN connections on some computers in the home, while keeping others connected. Likewise with the. Read more WIFI connection.Trying to run a home based business with these issues makes you see red!I finally took the leap and purchased a new Netgear D6400.
No more drop outs & no more DNS connection issues. Several ADSL speed test have also revealed faster download speeds. For us the removal of Telstra modem technology has been a win, win solution to our frustrating internet connection problems.
Will be returning Gateway Unit asap totally dissatisfied no one has been able to fix issue and trying to do a Tafe course its not viable, very upset. I have spent countless hours on calls to Telstra they have been unable to resolve the issues.
Took the whole system to Mudgee Telstra Shop and although they spent hours trying to resolve still unable to connect. More phone calls and just more frustration will be contacting Ombudsman to return unit and start all over again getting a system that does work so I can do my Studies online. Telstra Gateway 'Max' Technicolor TG799vacIn January 2015, I contacted Telstra to get a possible service issue resolved, as well as a modem replacement (as they had told me it's likely a device issue) and they sent the Telstra Gateway 'Max' Technicolor TG799vac in a snazzy green box, sealed with shrink wrap. Problem wasn't that they charged me for it - but that it only worked for just over a year before it constantly shut down and rebooted. Older ADSL2 modems reconnect to the internet on disconnection; they don't shut down completely, they. Read more come with installation discs, and the speeds are consistent.

I complained to them again in March this year (as it was determined to be a modem fault caused by a bad line (which damaged the 'Max' modem as well as the line)) - got a replacement - of the SAME MODEL - and that too fails (not as often but it reboots if there is a problem with the service). When it does that, the down speed drops to a woeful 2mbps or less. Unreliable, does not stay connected for long.
I have since gone back to an older Telstra Thomson Gateway TG782T (which seems to work just fine with fewer dropouts and no reboots). This 'Max' modem, despite its good looks and modern styling, does not come with any installation CDs or driver support so it's useless on a clean OS (in particular Windows 7 and 8.1). If you have one of these, don't use it; the best place for it is straight into the bin as it's not worth it. As for the service dropouts, I have recently experienced these again, and have since contacted the TIO to get it resolved properly. There is no NBN in my area at present so I have to be content with ADSL2, but I will not be accepting any more of these cheapies from Telstra in the future as they are absolute junk.
Just as well this model was discontinued; it should have been recalled as it's junk and is not fit for the purpose it was designed for which in my case is ADSL2. If I could I would rate this 0 stars. I had was sent a T gateway from telstra when I signed up and the Internet speeds were shockingly slow. After several hours of tech support they then supplied me free of charge a Gateway Max TG799vacThis has turned out to be worse, after months of calls and tech support and every check they could think ofI finally had enough!!!
And for some reason I just tried an old adsl2 single port Modem that i had.And what do you know i have about 3 times the speed. Its through an apple airport extreme and works very well, Dont use the Telstra rubbishIf you look for a Router recommendation you will never see buy a Telstra Modem will you. Telstra did not properly research the TG797n v3 modem / router before dumping them on unsuspecting NBN customers. They have an extremely poor wireless signal strength and are not acceptable for use in an average home.
It has now been discontinued for good reason and Telstra should now contact all customers who have the modem / router to determine if they are satisfied and if they are not, they should replace them free of charge with a device that is designed to provide effective wireless coverage in an average home. Alternatively refund customers so that they can buy and install their own device. Well, we're onto my third unit now in less than 12 months. Give Telstra their due, they replace the modem within 3 - 5 days.but with the same rubbish!! Our first unit's Wi-Fi failed while the second unit's Ethernet failed.
On top of this, all three units have very poor Wi-Fi coverage so unless your in the same room as the modem forget it. Telstra did tell me that they were going to send me the Wi-Fi Max unit instead but then backtracked on this and sent the same. I have no choice but to go out this weekend to purchase an alternative (Non-Telstra) Unit. It's a plain looking plastic box - top black, bottom white of a coarse finished case and a row of 10 Leds at the front. The back are 4 ethernet ports, 1 WAN, 1x PSTN and two Handset connectors.
6 compatible DECT handsets can be registered to use the gateway as a base station. WiFi is a dual band for 2.4 and 5 GHZ devices to connect either via PIN or WPS. The user interface is quite impressive and very well thought out - I have not seen something like this before. So far I've not met a single problem with this box.The only 'pothole in the r.
